NORTHERN TERRITORY
PRODUCTION OF MEAT r; VESTEY’S REPLY TO CRITICISM MELBOURNE, Nov. 24.Applying, to criticism against Vestey Brothers made by Mr H. G. Nelson, member for the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives, recently, the attorney in Australia for Vestey Brothers, Mr C. W. D. Conaeher, of the Australian Investment Agency, Limited it’iS quite untrue for Arf . Nelson to suggest that Vestey interests werO trying to' prove that the $3 or them Territory would not produce beef. It 1 was childish nonsense to say that Ves- 1 tey" V would indulge in .propaganda to ’ disparage thq pjjofJftce of their own ■ cattle properties and meat works. Mr | Nelson stated that Vestey’s desired to eeq the Argentine benefit at the ex- 1 pense of Australia, but Vestey’s had , interests in practically every beef exporting country in the world, and. up to a few years ago had more money . invested in Australia than in the i others. i Unfortunately Mr Nelson as a Labor < leader, was one of the chief creators f of the labor'conditions which i compelled. Yestey v e to cease operations, t If Vestey’s. had ijeen allowed to put < the same, effort into fhO Territory as < wp.uld'haye been put into a. similar pro- j positipn elsewhere, they would have • increased production and developed [ tlicit properties. During Mr Nelson’s . regime as a" Union organiser it was : foflnd to be impossible to compete, ( as the cost of handling of goods became i the highest in Australia. I ’ Ar,:- ' !==g
