LEAGUE CUTS
AN ECONOMY “BREEZE” BUDGETARY QUESTIONS GENEVA. Oct. 13. There was a breeze to-day between Bir Eric Drummond, the SecretaryGeneral of the League, and Sir Hilton Young, British Minister of Health, in the Fourth Commission of the Assembly dealing with budgetary questions. Sir 'Thomas Wilford, New Zealand High Commissioner, asked for the abolition of tho auxiliary League offices in London, Paris. Berlin, and Tokio. Sir Hilton Young in tho interests of economy supported the motion, ns he felt that these auxiliary officers wore no longer as useful as they had been formerly and did not justify the annual expenditure of 402 000 Gwiss francs (£16,080 at par) for their upkeep. Tho Secretary-General, however, laid stress on tho valuable work done bv these offioes. Ho stated that their abolition would involve further expenditure. In future whenever .work was required specially from these: places members of the information section would have to be sent to them. Sir Erie Drummond stated: plainly his disapproval of Sir Hilton Young’s policy. With some heat lie said that Sir Hilton Young would have to fight out the question with people in England “who really did care for the League,” Finally tho question of abolition of the auxiliary offices was referred to the ’ supervisory committee, who will report upon it next year. 30 PER CENT. CUT PLAN AMENDED
Sir Hilton Young also opposed the proposal of Sir Thomas Wilford that the 10 per cent, cut in salaries for future contracts of officials should only apply to salaries above £4OO. He declared that it. was particularly the League officials in the lower categories Alio are judged by foreign, standards as the best paid, and he strongly opposed any exemption from the 10 per cent reduction. It. was ultimately agreed that, salaries below £2OO should be exempt from reduction. ?
