ONE MAN RETAKEN
ESCAPED PRISONERS STRUGGLE WITH POLICE (Per Press Association.) WHA NATAN E, this day. The search for the escaped prisoners, Clayton and Morton, was continued yesterday. The whereabouts of the men wore discovered by 'the fact that they broke into a roadman’s hut in the Waimana Gorge yesterday morning, and Kirk’s house, in tlio same locality, in the afternoon. At the latter place they secured supplies of meat and bread. Police and civilians patrolled the roads in the vicinity, and at .10 o’clock last, night observed two men on the road making in the direction of Opotiki. Constable Johnson surprised and grabbed Morton, who hit the constable in tho face with a billy, and in the ensuing struggle both went over the bank. The constable overpowered and handcuffed Morton.
Constable Breed grappled with Clayton, who wriggled away, regaining the bush, and is still at large. Morton was the lender of the pair, Being a motor driver and mechanic, and having a knowledge of the district.
The police are si ill searching for Clayton.
