CARPENTERS’ AWARD
CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS CPnr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Conciliation proceedings in the dispute between the New Zealand Federated Builders and Contractors’ Industrial Association and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners commenced to-day on a Dominion basis before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. W. Newton. Mr. W. T. Mountjoy appeared as the employers’ advocate and Mr. T. Bloodworth appeared for the employees. Reduction of the wage of carpenters, joiners, and joiners’ machinists to 2s an hour was asked by the employers, while the employees asked for the old rates of 2s 33d per hour. Tt was agreed that, the worker responsible for carrying out work and who gives instructions to the .workers should receive not less than Is per day extra. The employers asked for a 44-hour week, and the employees for a 40-hour week.
The employers finally offered a new rate of Is lid but declined to depart from their original offer in regard to overtime rates and holiday pay. Some minor concessions regarding general conditions were offered. The uniqn will consider the offer and give a reply when the conference resumes to-morrow.
