ESCAPED PRISONERS
SEEN AT WHAKATANE AN EXCITING CHASE (Por Press Association.) WHAKATANE, last night. An exciting chase after the prisoners Arthur Albert Clayton and Graham Wilfred Marton, who escaped from Waikeria prison camp on Saturday afternoon was made by Constables Cummings, Johnson, and McDonnell of this district last night. Tlio police were advised that _ a Chrysler car answering the description of one stolen at Okoroire had boon observed refuelling at a garage in Whakatane. The police gave chase towards Tancatua, the car speeding at (30 miles an hour through Tancatua, missed the turn to Opotiki and proceeded towards Ruatoki. The police car, although it kept up with the stolen car, was unable to catch it, owing to dust obscuring the vision. When the occupants realised that they wore running to a dead end of the main road they quickly abandoned the car in the darkness and made towards the hills. The police guarded the river bridge and the vantage points all night, and with the assistance of settlers combed the valley area to-day without finding a trace of the prisoners.
