POOR BATTING DISPLAY WELLINGTON V. HAWKE’S BAY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, lasi night. •Weak batting marked tho first representative cricket match played here this season, when the touring Hawke's Bay team met a Wellington eleven. Though the wicket was firm the outfield was fast. Hawke's Bay could only reach 122. The batsmen made a poor showing against the bowling of Dennis Blundell, the ex-Cambridge College player, who swung the ball both ways in Inking six wickets for 48 runs oil 13.fi overs. Ellis (35) and Brown (27) were the only batsmen to get going. Wellington did a little better in their first .innings, being all dismissed for 25.'!. IT. Foley (fit!) and C. S. Dempster (58) were the only batsmen to show form against the bowling of H. Heaney, who captured, five wickets for 57 runs. Hawke’s Bay, in their second innings, scored nine without, loss. Unless both Wellington and Hawke’s Bay can produce better form than they showed to-day, they will find both Otago and Canterbury too good for them this season.
