AUSTRALIAN NUDISTS
MAY BUY AN ISLAND CANBERRA, Nov. 22. There is a possibility that the nude cult may at last find undisputed expression of its ideals on a Commonwealth island. “The oldest nature club in Australia ” —that is its own claim—is among the many interests which, since the lease of Bowen Island .was passed in a few weeks ago, with a reserve of £.IOO, at a quiet auction in Canberra, have awakened to the attractions of the lease.
The island is owned by the Commonwealth Government, and is leased for £lO a year. The present, lessee is Silas Cook —a farmer, whose .10 years’ lease, which does not expire until 1938, was under offer under a mortgagers’ sale, at the reserve stated. If the club secured a lease of the island the present presumption js that, on its privato property, outside observation from a public place, the club would have free vent for its cult. Meanwhile, other interests have been inquiring. Among them are yachting enthusiasts and a hotel company, which sees in the property a chance of creating a Magnetic Island of the south.
