SWIMMING

GIBBS CUP RIVER RACE J. MILLER WINS TROPHY In a scratch race held last evening by the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club, for tho Gibbs Cup, 11 swimmers went to the start and the winner turned up in J. Miller, a prominent contestant in last year’s Hawke’s Bay championships. The distance of last night’s race was approximately 2150yd5., the course being from the William Pettio bridge to the Gladstone road bridge. Tho raco was the first of the season, and attracted a good deal of attention. Mr. O. R. Olsen, the starter, sent tho field off to a perfect start, and Miller soon forged to tho load, with D, W. McKeague, J. Clark, and 11. Maddox following closely, and Aislahie and O. Martin next. There was no change in the relative positions of the leaders in the first half of the distance, but Maddox, who was going well within himself, passed McKeague and Clark in tho third quarter, and drew up on Miller. The latter had a good reserve of sprinting power, however, and in tho last 50 yards spurted to pass the finishing line six yards ahead of bis nearest opponent. Maddox beat McKeague and Clark by a similar margin, this pair tying for third place, while O. Martin ami Aislahie were the next across tho line, with the rest closely bunched. The time was 2min. 46sec., indicating that the placed swimmers are getting into good form for the Bridson carnival, to ho held early next month.

A sealed handicap event was held in conjunction with the cup race, and was won by Maddox, who had a good margin on the winner of the scratch race. The Gibbs Cup was presented to Miller by the club president, Mr. ,T. S. Wauchop, who expressed congratulations to the winner upon his good performance. Swimmers generally are looking forward to the Bridsoh carnival, on December 10, at which the wellknown Auckland and New Zealand champion, Gordon Bridson, will be the chief performer.
