HAWKE CUP TRIAL GAME ; BAY WINS ON FIRST KNOCK HIGH SECOND INNING’S TOTAL (Special to the Herald.) WAIPIRO, BAY, this day. Though the elimination match between Poverty Bay and Waiapu was not played to a finish, in the time allotted, Poverty Bay took the honors of the match, and under the new rule regarding Hawke Cup engagements earned the right to challenge for the minor associations’ trophy. In their first innings, Poverty Bay made 215, beating the Waiapu first knock by 98 runs while in the second innings the visitors did some great hitting and gave Waiapu an impossible task in their second stand. From a point half-way -through Waiapu’s first innings, the probability of a Poverty Bay victory began to grow stronger, and though the Boast side managed to avoid a fellow-on, the superiority of the visitors was not left in doubt yesterday afternoon. One of the freest exhibtions of cricket seen on the East Coast was provided by the Poverty Bay representatives when, their first innings’ margin providing them almost with a guarantee of victory, they went hard for the bowling, and ran up a total of 309 in 248 minutes. The innings opened badly, for two wickets were down for 25 runs, but the joining of Carson and Boon in a third-wicket partnership brought the score up substantially, and 76 runs were on the board when the third man was dismissed. The fourth, fifth and six wickets did not cost the Waiapu bowlers many runs apiece, and with seven wickets down for 148 Poverty Bay looked like going out moderately soon.

iC. Fraser was solidly established, however, and when he was joined by Lockett, the pair began almost immediately to punish the bowling. They carried the score from 148 to 317 before their partnership was broken up, Lockett making frequent sixes, and Fraser not being behindhand in laying on the wood. Finally Lockett was caught by Akers off Moody, when tho pair had put on 169 runs between them, Lockett’s contribution being 121. Fraser was there to tho last wicket, and was the last man dismissed, with a score of 110 to his credit. In the face of such scoring, it was natural to find the Waiapu bowling figures rather inflated, Moody having taken four wickets for 73 runs, Akers two for 26, and N. Cottle two for 36. With only an hour left before the calling of time, Waiapu was obviously hopeless of making the required number of runs to avoid defeat, and the batsmen went out for a hit. One result was that wickets fell in quick succession, but the runs came at the rate of more than two a minute, and when time was called there were seven down for 125 runs. The top score was made by W. Oates with 42, and Spence 28, Gilmore 23 not out, and Walsh 15, all batted well. Boon and Carson shared the bowling honors with four wickets for 58 runs, and three for 39 respectively. Details of the scoring yesterday were as under: — POVERTY BAY First Innings 215 Second Innings.
