FREE STATE GOVERNOR
SHOPKEEPER APPOINTED TREMENDOUS SURPRISE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) DUBLIN, Nov. 26. Mr. Daniel Buckley, a shopkeeper, and ex-member of the Dail, has been appointed Governor-General. A communique states: “His Majesty appointed Mr. Buckley on the advice of the Free State Executive.” The appointment is a tremendous surprise, but Mr. Buckley is esteemed by all classes. He recently retired, transferring his shop to bis son. The new Governor-General is closely interested in national movements, especially the revival of the Irish language. Ho participated in the rebellion of 1916, when he organised a small band of volunteers and marched on Dublin. He was arrested and deported, but was released at the Christmas amnesty. He was elected deputy for Kildare, and voted against the acceptance of the Anglo-Irish treaty, lie was defeated at the 1931 election.
