CANOE CAPSIZED
LITTLE GIRL DROWNED TRAGEDY AT TE PUIA Through the overturning of a canoe on the Te l’uia lake, Doris l’erston, 10, was, drowned on Saturday afternoon, at about 4.45 o’clock. With a companion, Mary Maurirere, 15, the deceased went bathing in the lake, and the younger girl climbed into a canoe, which drifted out into deep water, and capsized. The little girl was unable to .swim, and after an unsuccessful attempt to rescue her the elder girl ran for assistance, returning with a Maori lad wtio dived and recovered the body from deep water in which it had sunk. An inquest was to have been held tins morning. The deceased was an orphan, ami she and Mary Maurirere lived with Mr. and Mrs. Barber, at Te Puia Springs.
