The subject of whether or not plants should be watered in dry wcallmr was briefly discussed at to-day’s Rotary luncheon at the conclusion of an address on gardening by Mr. N. F. Currie. In reply to a question, Mr. Currie said that at this time of the year it was better to cultivate the soil rather than to water the plants, but if watering was resorted to it was better to do this thoroughly. Another Rotariau said the subject of whether or not tomatoes should bo watered was one on which varying opinions were held. Mr. Currie said that in Gisborne, where so much dry weather was experienced in the summer, tomatoes must he watered to a certain extent, and, as with all other watering, this operation should ho curried out at night. Sulphate of ammonia in liquid form, at the rate of 2oz. to a benzine tin of water, was the best fertiliser for tomatoes, each half dozen plants to receive 5 gallons of the mixture, which helped as a protection from disease, as well as a plant food.
