VALUABLE RESULTS

THE BUILDING SUBSIDY 9000 WORKERS BENEFIT (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The total value of building work approved for subsidy under the Unemployment Board’s scheme of assistance is approximately £900,000, and the number of workers who will have received some employment at their own trade and at full wages hv the time these contracts arc completed l , will total 9000. This information was given by the acting-Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, in an interview last night. The Minister announced that tho scheme would operate only until December 31. “There is no doubt whatever that the scheme has had a most stimulating effect on tlie building industry,” said the Minister. “This .is proved by the figures, which disclose that the monthly value of building permits alone has more than doubled as against the figures for the period immediately prior to the commencing of the subsidy.”

In announcing that the scheme would operate only until December 3.1, the Minister said the rules provided that tho subsidy would be payable after that date in respect to any men engaged and actually started on approved works prior to the end of December, but the wages of any men engaged l after that date would not receive the subsidy. Further, if the works were not completed by June 30 next, the amount of subsidy would bo reduced to one-half .in respect to .wages earned on and after July I, 1933.
