(Herald Correspondent.) The dismantling of the old town bridge, which was seriously damaged during the 1931 earthquake, and finally completely destroyed in that of September, 1932, is now being carried out, a good deal oi the material being sold as firewood.

The question is being asked by many borough ratepayers as to why the old bridge should not be deemed to belong to the Borough Council, or at least to the county and borough councils combined. A statement made by one of the old residents appears to settle the point at issue. In the first place there was no Borough Council till 1909, and the Clyde town district was not established until 1884 the steps, to erect the traffic bridge were well under way by then, and it was completed .in 1888. The contract price was only £13,500, and the major portion of the money was found by the Government under the Roads and bridges Construction Act, so that if the structure belongs to any one department it is that of the Government through tile Public Works Department. There was a good attendance of bowlers on the local green on Wednesday, the contest for the Wilson memorial rose bowl and the J. V. Wilson buttons was continued, Cullen defeating Andresen. The children have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in this district. Continuing the contest for- the bvensen Fours, on Wednesday night, Crawford met Johansen, and the latter, getting the better of the start, won by three-quarters of a length. In the second heat, Gemmell defeated Pert by l-£ lengths, arid on Thursday evening, Gay defeated Burridge by about two lengths.
