YOUNG ENGLISH AIRMAN WELLINGTON GIRL’S ENGAGEMENT Ail interesting romance developed during the voyage of the mail boat from Sydney to Auckland, and on the liner’s arrival it was announced that Miss Mary Lcnnie, of Island Bay, Wellington, had become engaged to Mr It. T. Richards, the young Englishman who piloted Lady Clmytor on her flight; from England to Australia last March. The young couple were travelling on the steamer, Miss Lonnie returning to New Zealand from a visit to Australia, and Mr Richards travelling to Los Angeles on route to England. Lady Chaytor was also a passenger on the liner. She is proceeding to America to give a series of lectures on fashions in dress.

Since his long flight from England, Mr Richards has been doing a great deal of flying in Australia. He met Miss Lonnie in Melbourne, where he learned that he would bo a fellowpassenger with her on the ship to Auckland.

As a result of his flying experience in Australia Mr Richards has become greatly impressed with the farming potentialities of the Northern Territory, and he has recently purchased Melville Island, with an area of 2000 square miles, which lies to the north of Darwin. There lie intends to establish a large sheep and cattle station. The island is also suitable for the growing of peanuts and a large variety of tropical produce. Mr Richards said lie was proceeding to England to make final arrangements in. connection with the purchase of the island. He hoped the marriage would take place on his return. Lady Ghaytor, who has been lecturing round the world with the object of raising money to enable her family to resume residence in Witten Castle, Durham, said she was perfectly satisfied with the financial results of her tour of New Zealand and Australia. During the past 1- weeks she travelled 14,000 miles in Australia and lectured to over 60,000 people. She spoke in grateful terms of the hospitality she had received in Australia and New Zealand.
