SERVICE CAR CONTROL
STRICT SUPERVISION
REPLY TO M.P’S. STATEMENT
A reply to certain statements made by Mr. K. McKeen, M.P., in the Houso oi Representatives in regard to the supervision of service cars has _ been made by Mr. H. J. Knight, oi the White fc'tar service, and Mr. J. 0. Gal higher, of the Aard service, at Welling ton
We desire to correct any erroneous impression that there is not sufiicient supervision of service cars. If Mr. Me Keen had only taken the trouble to inquire from the Transport Department, he would have discovered that service cars are the most strictly controlled of any motor vehicles. No vehicle used jis a service car is permitted to operate except under a certificate of fitness, issued bv a competent inspector of the Public ' Works Department, frequently only after an examination lasting several hours, and, moreover, vehicles are subject to inspection at any other time the department thinks fit. “Mr. McKeen referred to the large number of accidents arising out of motor transport, giving the impression that this large number of accidents was attributable to service cars. It might lie news to Mr. McKeen to know that at a conference convened by the Government last year to consider motor accidents, their causes and prevention, statistical records were tabled by the Government Statistician which showed that during a period of several years before the conference, the percentage of accidents attributable to service cars was nil. This fact was favorably commented upon by the conference.”
