SMALL FARM PLAN
SATISFACTORY RESULTS MANY SELF-SUPPORTING (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A total of 562 unemployed men hav; been placed on small farms. Half of these are now off the unemployment funds, and a number of others are on reduced sustenance, according to information the Rt. lion. J. G. Coates gave the House last night when the vote for £500,000 for this purpose was under discussion.
Mr M. J. Savage (Lab., Auckland West) asked how many unemployed it was intended to settle under this plan. It wae only men who were prepared to tackle anything who would take this on, and anyone who ran away with the idea that "this plan was going to 'promote land settlement and reduce unemployment must have a very elastic imagination. He agreed that land settlement was desirable, but this was not the way to deal with it. Replying, Mr Coates said the scheme was not limited to 10 acres. It could be anything from five to 200 acres, depending on the class of land. Half the men placed on the land under this scheme were now off the unemployment fund, and a number of others were on reduced sustenance.
