TOKOMARU BAY MEWS
BOWLS AND TENNIS OPEN (Herald Correspondent.) The official openings of both the Tokomaru Bay Bowling Club and tho Tpkomuru Bay Tennis Club were held on Monday afternoon. Tho weather was fine and members and their friends began playing about 10 a.m. The opening of the Bowling Club was performed by the president, Mr. F. Thompson, who spoke favorably of the condition of the green and surroundings, and complimented the greeukeeper, Mr. if. Chaft'ey, on tho results with which his work had been attended. The president’s remarks wore endorsed by Messrs, li. Dudlield, representing the Gisborne Bowling Centre, T. Corson, tho Gisborne dub, 1\ Smith, tho Kahutia dub, and W. Ranger, the Poverty Bay club. Law, Powell, Dudfield, Sawyer (s) 21 v. Ramsley, Lowe, Corbett, J. Roberts (s) 21. Ranger, Ilankey, Fischbach, Hartley (s) 30 v. Riddell, E. Hankey, Findlay, Walker (s) 16. Power, Prince, Jenkins, P. Smith (s) 16. In opening tho Tennis Club the president, Dr. N. R. Mackay, spoko in a eulogistic manner of the state of tho courts, which were in first-class condition. He also referred to tho largo attendance, and wished the dub every success. A Yankee combined progressive doubles tournament resulted in L. Thomas, Gisborne, and Miss Elsie Hale registering 12 wins. In the evening both clubs held a dance in Te Pulca Hall; it was well attended and was most successful. At a suitable interval several speakers complimented tho officials of the two dubs on the arrangements for tho opening day and paid special tribute to tho work of tho ladies who had supplied refresh merits and supper.
