OBITUARY

MR. PERCY PITT (Received Nov. 24, 2 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 23. The death is reported of the musician, Mr. Percy Pitt. Born in London in 1870, the late Mr. Pitt studied on the Continent and made his debut as n composer in 1895. Ho was a director of music at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, director of the British National Opera Company, and a prominent member of the British Broadcasting Company. The late Mr. John Redman, a sheepfarmer'of Konini, Pqhiatua, who bequeathed a residential property of £IOOO to the. Pqhiatua Plunket society, was a pioneer of that’ district. He was 72 years of ago, and came to New Zealand 50 years ago. When the Forty-Mile Bush district was opened he drew a section, which lie farmed until his death. Mr. Janies Homy Carrington, 73, a pioneer of Tiiumaninui, lias died. Mr Carrington was horn in Cornwall and came to New Zealand 65 years ago. He resided in Dunedin and later at Eketa Inina, where ho built several sawmills before moving to Taumarunui 27 years ago.

Dr. Walter Fell, formerly well known in Wellington, died at Maliina- Bay, near Wellington, on Tuesday. A son of the late Mr. Alfred Fell, of Nelson, lie studied medicine at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, returning to New Zealand and joining Dr. W. E! Collins in practice in Wellington. Ifo retired from practice in 1907, but when the war broke out he went to England and was given a commission with the Royal Medical Corps, serving in various parts of the war zone and eventually in too Soldiers’ Hospital, Bethnal Green, London. Dr. Fell married in 1886 the third daughter of the late Mr. Justice Richmond. He is survivtcl by bis wife, and two sons, Mr. Christopher Fell, of Whangarei, Lieutenant-Commander W. Fell, of the Royal Navy, and three daughters, Mrs. F. A Wilson, Mrs. G. V. Bogle, and Miss A. Fell.

Mr. Emil Isaac Halsted, a well-known Dunedin business man, died on Tuesday evening. Bom in Melbourne in 1867, Mr. Halsted arrived in New Zealand in the middle ’eighties, and except for occasional visits abroad, had continuously resided in the Dominion. He was mam aging director of Hallenstein Bros., Limited, and chairman of directors of the D.1.C., Limited. For a considerable period lie was connected with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society, and this year held thp office of president, lie was a prominent member of the Hebrew congregation, and acted as treasurer for a lengthy period. He is survived by his wife, one son, and two daughters.
