Held up to Ridicule
T ONDON .’is telephone girls have a grouch. They have sent a resounding protest to the PostmasterGeneral because he allowed the Broadcasting Corporation to “guy” them in a radio skit a few nights ago. In the skit, the scene of which was a telephone exchange, the girls were made to drop aitchcs, chew sweets and generally behave as all good telephone girls know they should not. .How the Post Office Workers’ Union lias voiced the “strongest possible ob-
jection” to the skit, which suggested telephonists have not even a cursory acquaintance with decent English,” and much more weighty matter to the same effect. The 8.8. C. has calmed them down by replying that the programme was conceived in a spirit of light-hearted f un _but it is a serious social offenco in England to drop your aitches.
