LORD HOWE & AUCKLAND AMATEUR’S SUCCESS The enthusiasm of a young Auckland radio amateur Avas rewarded last Wednesday night, Avhen he got in touch with the launch Betli at Lord Howe Island p,ud had a conversation in Morse extending over an hour. He Avas told that the; party of Aucklanders, who are making the long trip to Australia in tin; launch owned by Mr. T. 11. Wobb, ol Nyrthcote, were enjoying their stay at tlie island and expected to leave again on Saturday. Sydney Webb is a qualified radio amateur, and the launch carries a transmitting. and receiving set. The Auckland amateur made arrangements to endeavor to get in touch with the launch during its A'oyage, but it Avas not until Wednesday night that he established communication, though it was reported that his calls had been heard earlier in the trip. Contact was established about 11 o’clock on Wednesday night, and the conversation ay as carried on until after midnight. Mr. Webb reported that, he had been given assistance by the radio operator at Lord Howe Island and both parties, were pleased Avith the clearness with which the messages were received at a distance-, in a straight line, of about 800 miles. They Avere working on an 80-metre amateur transmitting band. The Beth left Auckland on September 19 and cleared Whangaroa on October 2. She reached Norfolk Island on October -8. The launch met bad Aveather on one stage of the voyage, and was hove to for 84 hours. Site reached Lord Howe Island on Saturday, October 15, covering a distance of 553 miles in three days nine hours.
