OBITUARY

MR. JOHN KINDER A citizen who has been a prominent figure l in this community for many years and who has held the respect and esteem of a wide circle of friends passed to his rest yesterday morning, when Air John Kinder, barrister amt solicitor, succumbed to on illness extending over several months, which he bore with remarkable fortitude and cheerfulness. .Mr Kinder was horn at Balclutha, Otago, his parents being well known and highly respected residents of that district, and after being educated at Milton High .School and Otago University, whore he gained his B.A. degree, he entered the teaching profession, being appointed to the staff of the Napier High School, on which he • served several years, coining to Gisborne some 30 years ago as assistant master of the secondary division of the newlyformed district high school. Later he succeeded to the headmastership of the school, which grew in strength and subsequently attained the status of a high school. After several years in control of the school, Mr Kinder retired and entered the legal profession, joining the firm of, Messrs. Chrisp and Coleman, and subsequently practising on his own account. He still maintained an active interest in educational matters and in h'is old school, serving for many years as a member of the Board of Governors. In other civic activities he took a keen interest, and, as a member of the Waikanao Beach Society, did valuable work in the improvement of the amenities at this popular seaside resort. He was a bowling enthusiast and last year held office as president of the Gisborne Bowling Club. Cricket also was a favorite pastime with him, and in the annual matches between the professions he was generally able to put up a good Hatting performance. In his younger days Air Kinder took an active part in the volunteer movement. He was a member of tho East Coast. Mounted Rifles and also com marbling officer, with the rank off* major, of the school cadets of the district. In these varied interests and in his profession he came in close touch with many in the community, and his upright character, generous nature and kindly spirit won him hosts of friends, ,by whom his demise will be sincerely mourned. He leaves a widow and family of two hoys and one daughter— Mr Dudley J. Kinder, Air Revell Kinder, and Aliss Hazel Kinder —to whom much sympathy will be extended in their sad bereavement. MR. J. R. REDSTONE In the presence of a large gathering .of mourners, the late Mr J. R. Redstone was laid to rest yesterday afternoon at the 'Taruheru cemetery. The Rev. J. H. Boyd conducted a brief service at the residence of the late Mr Redstone’s soil, in Stout street, prior to the departure for the cemetery, and later officiated at the graveside. The attend mice constituted a striking tribute to the esteem in which the deceased was held, and included a full mifster of the Montrose Lodge, on behalf of which Air A. Williamson conducted a Afasonic coromonv. Pallbearers comprised Messrs. *J. L. Smaill, T. Adair, O. Hampton, R. Robertson, A. Langford •mu! C. Gordon. Many wreaths were ,biiil upon the casket, a number representing the tributes of people resident outside Gisborne. MRS. J. DUN.COMRE There was a very large attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of Airs. J. Duneomhe, who was killed in tho railway crossing accident on. Friday, fully 70 cars forming a long cortege. The Rev. F. I. Parsons conducted the service at Haisnian’s private mortuary, and tho service at the graveside was taken by Canon A. F. Hall, while the pallbearers were Messrs. II H. DcCosta. J. Turnbull, F. Collin, J. Walsh, C. Willis, and C. Hillyard. Many beautiful wreaths were laid on the grave, the tributes numbering about 60. A pioneer of Franklin, Air. James Bover Brown, has died at his residence in Pukckoho, at the age of S 3 years.
