BROADWAY SHOWS
PERFORMANCES THAT DISGRACE .NEW YORK, Sept. 4. .The police and clergy of New York are gravely concerned about the_ invasion of Broadway by salacious burlesque shows and low-class dance halls. The famous street of bright lights, for long the pride of the city, is being overrun by disreputable places of entertainment formerly relegated to the back, streets. The type of “amusement” provided in these burlesque theatres has shocked the most broad-minded of religious leaders, while property owners are up in arms at the consequent deterioration of the value of sites. Many reputable theatres are closed, while burlesque shows of almost incredible obscenity are playing nightly to packed audiences, composed of the .scum of the city.
