INTEREST SUSTAINED

AMATEUR ATHLETICS H.8.-P.B. SUB-CENTRE “In times such as we are now experiencing ft would Jje natural to suppose that there would have been, a waning of interest in the sport of amateur athletics during the past season, but the reverse has to be recorded,” slates the fourth annual .t'epoH .of the Hawke's Bay-Pov-erty Bay iSub-Cfentre of the N.Z.A.A.A. “Throughout llie area,” the. report continues, “there has been manifest greater activity than (pier before on the part of active competitors, and life public has by its patronage shown, that amateur sport finds a definite place with it in its everyday life. “Hie number of registered competitors shows an increase when compared with the previous year and this fact in itself shows that the sport continues to increase from a- competitive point of view. FINANCIAL LdSS „ “On the financial side a loss of £l7 16s 4d on the .season’s working has to be recorded. This is accounted for in part by the fact that ices due from those clubs who ~suffered owing, to the earthquake of February 5. 1931, have been written oil. In addition, a team of 19 athletes was sent ,to the Wellington provincial championships. The expenditure incurred, tvas well worth while and the team failed W, ohlv two points to secure the MtVilly Shield. i N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS I “At the Now Zealand championships I. Priscdll took the title in the dpts mile walk, and H. Leach annexed the 440yds. hurdles, while Misses Lean, Tong and McGregor were members of the Wellington provincial Indict’ relay team that took the ho tiers in the chainpionsliipi relay. In addition, 0. Phillips, although unplaced in the hop, step and jump, exceeded the standard and was awarded a certificate. To all the. above-mentioned athletes the. congratulations of the subcentre arc extended oil their successes, while to all members who represented the sub-centre, appreciation of their efforts is tendered. “The anb-cehtre cluimpibnslnps were held at. Napier on February 6 and were a great success from the competitive point of view, although the ,public patrenege was diSijppohitihg. The Napier dull won the club championship aggregate. NEW BKGULATIO.NS. “The N.Z.A.A.A. is this year insli tuting a new method in connection with the registration of competitors. Registration numbers will be allocated from Wellington on receipt of the name and address of each competitor, together with the necessary registration fee. It behoves clubs to shbmit their lists to the subcentre promptly in order that the iuinibers can be obtained with the minimum i loss of time. No competitor xyill be i

allowed to compete at any meeting without exhibiting the number allotted in the approved manner. The new method lias nothing to recommend it, and we can see nothing but confusion in consequence. “The thanks of the sub-centre are due to oilr patroness, Mrs. A. Holden, for a donation of £3 3s ; to our lion, auditor, Mr. W. Anderson; to the Napier Citizens’ Band ; to the press, for its valued assistance in reporting the doings of athletes throughout this area; to our representatives on the N.Z.A.A.A. executive; and to affiliated clubs for their prompt attention to affairs affecting the sub-centre and their own local control. ”
