(Herald Correspondent.) The October meeting of the Matawai Women’s Institute took place in Mrs. Fielder’s hall on Thursday, when Mrs. C G. Fielder, sen., vice-president, presided over an attendance of 10 members and four visitors. Thanks and 'best wishes for a happy meeting .were received from the president, who was not yet well enough to attend. Correspondence and the. half-yearly report and statement of accounts were adopted. It was decided to hold the men's evening oil November 4, the final arrangements being left to the compiittee. Mrs. Gibson reported that the half-yearly Poverty Bay federation /council meeting would he held on the Showgrounds and that arrangements would be made for excursion rates on November 11, should enough members signify their intention to attend. In addition to the usual competition next month, the Yates’ coupon competition for the best collection of flowers exhibited hv members: will be, decided. Potatoes wore distributed for the potato-growing contest. The oat cake competition produced only one entry. Mrs. C. V. Smith gave a very comprehensive demonstration of pino needle 'baskets, which was followed with interest. A motion was passed supporting the A.A.A.’s attitude towards hoardings on public thoroughfares. The hostesses, Mesdames T. (Scholium and A. Taylor, supplied a delicious afternoon tea, after which Miss N. Steele gave a lesson in follc-dancing, using a new record as accompaniment. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded her, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

A Poverty Bay representative basketball team is expected to play a match in Matawai to-day. The opening, of the tennis season in Matawai was postponed from last week ('ll account of the wet weather. A committee meeting was held on Thursday evening, when it was decided to hold the official opening on October 22.

The Motu Rugby sub-union hall was held in tlie Matawai Hall on Thursday and was well attended by patrons from Motu, Motnhora, Rakauroa and surrounding districts. Extras wore played by Mrs. Mehrtens, Misses Mortleman and P engrove, in addition to the music supplied by Miss Rum's orchestra. During the evening Mr. G. Caulton, on behalf of his father, Mr. R. S. Caulton, in a very happy speech, presented the cup to llio Matawai team. After 'congratulate ing ttie winners, Mr. Caulton expressed the wish that the sub union will commence its matches earlier next year, and said that nothing would give more pleasure than fo see a representative team from this end return with the Black ;nd White Shield. Mr. R. Mortleman received the cup amid loud applause. Mr. F. Reid endorsed Mr. Caulton’s remarks, and the Good Gup, won by the Matawai seven-a-side team, was also presented, together with 'badges to the individual members of the winning teams, and for special merit in the position held in that team. Mr. R. Mortleman suitably responded. Mr. Reid received a hearty response when lie called for a vote of thanks to the ladies who worked fo cheerfully to assist with the supper mrangements. Dancing continued up to the small hours, and all voted the fv nation a great success.
