REGENT THEATRE

Bayard Veiller, who wrote Tho Tii.il of Mary Dugan” ■ and “Within The Law,” which Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford respectively were featured, wrote the screen adaption of “Unashamed,” the new Regent attraction, which has been described as the greatest court room : drama filmed for some time. The picture is noteworthy for the fact thbt it l 'Was inspired by the sensational Pennsylvania murder trial of a few months ago, which the public will doubtless' recall, as it received considerable airing in the New Zealand newspapers. Here is a brief resume of the story: Joan (Helen Twelvetrees), daughter of a New Ybrk millionaire, is a typical modern girl, with perhaps too much freedom. Thero is a deep attachment between herself. and her younger brother Dick (Robert' Young)j who idolises her. She meets Harry Swift (Monroe- Owsley, of “Indiscreet” fame), a young man about town, and falls desperately in love with him. Swift is the son of Schmidt (Jean Hersholt), an old German grocer, but, like the cad he is; is ashamed of his father, and is in reality merely a fortune ‘hunter, seeking Joan’s money. Old Schmidt comes to Ogden, Joan’s father, and:tells him the truth about his son. Her father'and brother warn her against him, and refuse to hear of the union. Swift, seeking to force consent to the marriage, • takes Joan to a hotel overnight, returns to Ogden and threatens to make a scandal over it. In a struggle Dick shoots the man, is arrested, and placed on trial. Joan, full of resentment overt the death of her lover, goes on the witness stand and wrecks the “self defence” stoTv that is being told by the lawyer for the defence (Lewis Stone), by'■calmly' stating t hat her brother shot Swift,“without provocation.” Later, by dramatic turn of events, the realisation is .forced upon her that her brother is keeping silence about her true relations with.,The murdered man, and the real facts of the case to save her reputation. Overcome with remorse, she realises she has practically sent her brother to “the chair-”: The climax is sensational.. Thu second attraction is the well-known cornu dians, Laurel and Hardy, in their second full-feature presentation, “In County Hospital,” and claimed to be their most uproarious offering to date. “Overseas to Borneo,” land of the head hunters, and "Mickev Cuts Up,” another of the popular “Mickey Mouse” cartoon series, comprise what should prove an excellent evening’s entertainment.
