ODDS ON HOOVER

BUT ROOSEVELT MAY WIN POLITICS IN U.S.A. Writing to a. friend in Wellington, a Boston business man says some interesting things about political affairs in the United States. “Since January of this year tiro States have experienced the worst year of depression,” writes the Bostonian. ‘‘As always, human nature being like that, it was thought that after the beginning of the new year tilings would be better, but, on the contrary, they have become worse, decidedly worse than the first two depression years of 1930 and 1931. Congress has just adjourned after an unusually long and stormy session. All the important legislation considered by Congress and the Senate has boon of an emergency nature lo cope with present conditions.

“Just recently the American press has expressed some signs of better business conditions, specifically mentioning the resumption of production on the part of large basic products manufacturers, whose schedules require re-employment of a goodly number of people. The. fact remains, however, that many millions of people are still out of work, and the task of placing tho majority of them seems to 'be insurmountable. Two factors, those of domestic employment, and our apparent inability to recover export business, seems to heavily retard the return to anything like normal conditions.

“As you no doubt know, Mr. Hoover lias been re-nominated by the Republican Party, and Mr. Franklyn D. Roosevelt, Governor of the State of New York, and the most important Stale commercially (and politically in the electoral college) has been nominated by tho Democratic Party. Odds at present are 7 to 5 on Mr. Hoover, but many people believe that tho Democrats are going to be swept into office, and, although a Republican myself, I am inclined to believe that Mr. Roosevelt will be victorious.”
