(Herald Correspondent.) The recent warm showers have had a wonderful effect on the pastures. The flat lands are already green and tlie pastures healthy, whilst even the hills are showing up very well for verdure. Farmers have secured what promises to be a record lambing, with a low mortality. Twins and triplets are unusually common. At a meeting held to decide tlie form of wind-up to the hockey season on ■September 7, it was decided to.hold a euchre tournament and dance, and a strong committee was set up. A beautiful piano stool was donated by one o! tlie oldest members of the association, and Miss Alexander and the donor were appointed to take care of it. The mortal remains of the late Mr. ,T., Wheel wore laid to rest in the Wairoa cemetery in the presence of a considerable concourse of residents, a good many of very beautiful wreaths being sent as tokens of respect and sympathy. The Roy. T. A. Speer officiated at tlie late residence of the deceased and at the graveside. _ Mr. Speer also read the burial service of the Presbyterian Church' at the residence of the late Mr. Muir and at the Wairoa cemetery. There was a, large assemblage of friends and sympathisers, whilst the memorial emblems were both numerous and beautiful, testifying tlie high regard in which tho deceased was held in the community. Arrangements are now in progress for the. holding of the spring show by tho Horticultural Society. The schedule is a varied one, and caters for all classes of competitors, not omitting the younger people, for whom the society is specially anxious to cater. Nadyn Alexander Watson Reed, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Reed, Ruakituri, died on Saturday. His father is manager of the Ruakituri station, and the lad has been an invalid for the last 10 or 12 years. He suffered a shock during the earthquake period which had bad results for him. There is> much sympathy in the valley for the bereaved parents. As anticipated, TTawea Mataira, P. Smith, and C. Smith, of the Wairoa district, have been selected to represent Hawke’s Bay against Taranaki at Rugby football next Saturday. T. S. Haughtou, of Stratford and formerly of Wairoa, flayed for Taranaki last week against Wellington. Mr. Cyril Pert, Lucknow street, is in the. Napier Hospital undergoing treatment. —Mrs. T. Dawson and family, Napier, are paying a visit to the latter’s parents, Mrs. T. Tuomey, North Clyde. —Mr. J. P. Moore, who has been .on a business trip to Auckland, lias returned home. He reports a very optimistic state of affairs in the northern city.— Mr. V. E. Winter, jun., who has not been in the best of health for some time, is now back at work On Monday a carrier’s lorry just missed plunging to tho bottom of the Wairoa River, but was checked in time, though the ferry traffic was held up for a while. It is understood the driver left the gears in reverse and when the engine was started the lorry ran back over the edge of the punt before coming to a standstill. At the annual meeting of the Wairoa Howling Club there was a good attendance and keen interest was manifested in the proceedings, which were presided over by Mr. L. K. Galbraith. Apologies were noted from Messrs. J. McGoldrick. A. B. Smith, H. Prebhle, J. P. Moore and ’l’. Browne. The balance-sheet and report, the latter covering all the club’s activities, were adopted. Votes of sympathy with Mrs. M. Dillon, and Mr J. Andresen were passed, and thanks voted to Mrs. J. S. Wilson for valuable services rendered to the dub during the season. The election of officers resulted :—Patron, Mr. F. J. Sinlge, re-eJect-cd; president, Mr. M. Sheehan; viceoresidents,, Messrs. R.■ S. Paterson, J. S. Wilson, and W. J. Clark; secretary, Mr. Theo. *Browne; treasurer, Mr. J. Macdonald. A number of minor offices were filled, including a strong committee.' Several congratulatory speeches were made, and tlie. following new members Were elected: —Messrs. J. Joe. F. A. Lowe, D. Glengarry, J. Foster. P. Milne, A. Law, L. Ebbitt, W. Ebbitt'. A. G. Wilson, G. Hocking, W. H. Flint, A. Tolley, Pinel, and A. TT. Deighton. The honarary members elected were: Messrs. IT. L. Darker, W. A. Oarer, W. Martin, J. S. Gilligan, A. Gay, G. Brown, and E. and A. Pemberton, It was decided that in future the Oroouet- Club should maintain its own ground, hut the club’s plant would he available. Arrangements were made for a revision of the rules. The presentation of prizes won during the year then took place, and supper concluded a pleasant evening. The final in the senior Rugby” football championship was played on Saturday and resulted in Nuhaka winning the championship from Tapuae bv 15 points to 3. The latter team plaved short. In the iunior grade Old Bovs 11 beat Pirates 3. The junior game, Morere v. Wanderers, was not played.
