BETTER CANADIAN TRADE

STEAMER'S FULL CARGO EFFECT OF NEW AGEEEMENT The Canadian Government steamer Canadian Conqueror, which is due at. Auckland from Montreal about August 6, en route to Australia, will be the first steamer to bring cargo direct from Eastern Canadian ports to New Zealand since the new trade agreement between the two Dominions was ratified on May 24.

The increased trade which has resulted from the agreement is shown by the amount of cargo arriving by the Canadian Conqueror. she is carrying full cargo of about 800-0 tons of Canadian merchandise and a large quantity of this is for New Zealand. For a long period the Canadian Government steamers were only about two-thirds full, and the largest portion of each cargo was for Australia. At present the steamers travel to Auckland from ‘Canada monthly, and after discharging and loading in the south, they return to Canada via Australia, -New York and Boston. The combined New Zealand-Australian service. which has been in operation for over a year, was established because of the slackness of trade. During the previous six years separate services were maintained from Canada to Australia and to New Zealand.

In April lastt the Auckland agents of the Canadian National Steamships received advice that if business conditions improved sufficiently after the trade agreement was ratified, the separate service to New Zealand would be resumed.
