CUSTOMS REVENUE

WELLINGTON RETURNS DECLINE CONTINUES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last, night. The not customs revenue collected in Wellington, after having shown increases in A’pril and May over the corresponding months of last year, again shows a heavy decrease for June over June, 1031. The revenue collected during last month totalled £15(5,914, against £183,427 for June, 1931, a decrease of £2(1,480. Included in last .month’s total is £9799 derived from the increase of 2d a gallon in petrol duty, which is paid into the consolidated fund. But for this, the decrease would have been £30,245. For .the six months of the current year, the revenue was £1,035,092, against £1,133,345 for the corresponding period of 1931, a decrease of £97,750,

The duty collected in motor spirit last month was £20,202 at Od a gallon, and '£9759 at 2d a gallon, a .total of £39,921, as against £45,804 for June, 1931. The figures for the six months were £303,442 and £203,919 respectively, an increase of £39,523. The collections of tyre tax -.last month were £I4OO, as against £IOOO in June, 1931. For the six months there is a decrease of £2702, the figures .being £10,285 and £12,987 respectively. Beer excise collections for June were £3006 as against £3727 for June, 1931, a decrease of £l3l. For the six months the figures were £31,185 and £25,259 respectively an increase of £5926.

CHRISTCHURCH RETURNS PETROL TAX DECLINE (Per Press Association.) OHRISTOHURCII, last night. The outstanding feature of the customs returns in Christchurch for June, for the June quarter, and for the halfyear is the continued decrease in revenue from the motor spirit tax. The figures are as follows, last year’s figures being given in parentheses: Customs, June, 1932, £53,027 (June, 1.931, £50,060); beer duty, £OSIO ,(£7315); motor spirit tax, £15,042 (£20,997); tyre duty, £O6O (£700). For the June quarter the customs figures are: 1932, £105,089 (1931, £154,575); beer duty, £19,838 (£19,082);.motor .spirit tax, £48,205 (£63,833); tyre lax. £2191 (£2902). The January to June returns are: Customs, 1932, £351,738 (1931, £343,315); beer duty, £39,091 (£37,163); motor spirit tax, £100,829 (£121,183); tyre duty, £5712 (£8283).
