RHODES SCHOLARS

AUCKLAND AND OTAGO STUDENTS CHOSEN New Zealand’s Rhodes Scholars for 1531 are: Mr. J. M. Bertram, Auckland. Mr. G. S. Cox, 8.A., Otago. Mr. James Munro Bertram is the son of the Rev. I. E. Bertram, Devonport, and was born in Auckland in August, 1910. Ho attended colleges in Melbourne anc} Sydney, and- in 1924, entered the Waitaki Boys’ High School, Oaniani. While at Waitaki, he Avon many prizes in literature and French, was dux of the school in 1928, and followed up the winning of a Senior National 'Scholarship in 1925 with a Junior University Scholarship in 1927. He is now doing his final section for the B.A. degree', and during his course nr. the Auckland University College he l.as gained first place in English, French, and .Latin. He is at present assistant- in the English department, and is taking his diploma in journalism. Mr. Bertram was a member of the Waitaki first fifteen and took a prominent part in cricket, athletics and swimming, lie intends to study English or modern languages at Oxford with a view to take np literary work. Mr. Geoffrey Sandford Cox Avas born at Palmerston North in 1910, obtained bis primary education at Geraldine, and for a short time at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, arid later at Lie Sydney Church of England Gramroar School. In 1923 he entered the Southland Boys’ High School. During the five yeafe he. studied there ihe guinea- many prizes, and in 1925 be was aAvarded a Senior National Scholarship. 1:: 1927 he was proximo accesit to the dux, and gained a Lissio Rathbone entrance scholarship to Otago University. His university career began in the following year, Avlien he undertook a double course, in arts and law. In ids first year be topped his class in English and history, and was awarded the Gilroy Memorial Prize for English. In the following year lie was again top in history, and avoh the Macmillan Brown Prize for English -composition. In 1930 lm gained first-class terms in five out of six subjects, being # ,top of bis class in three. In the same year lie Avas awarded the George Young Scholarship for the most outstanding undergraduate career in any faculty, lie also won the Bowen Prize of Hie University of New Zealand. Ho completed his B.A. degree a' the end of last year, and also completed two-thirds of his LL.B. degree. This year be has been taking the course for M.A. and honors in history, and the tAvo remaining subjects for the third section of the LL.B. degree. In sport Mr. Cox lias a .good record. He intends to study philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford for the 8.A.-, and also to take a law course for a 13.C.L. degree.
