Alembers of the gardening circle of the ■Women's Club spent a pleasant' afternoon yesterday as the guests of AIrS. W. Green at her residence in Clifford street. Airs. Ti. A. Crawford gave an interesting demonstration of floral wreath making. This was illustrated by making two wreaths and a cross, which were laterkindly conveyed by Airs. A. J. Buckley to the Holy Trinity Church and placed on the Wayside Cross there.

Air Gordon Bryan, visiting examiner for'the Royal Academy of Music, London, was the guest of members of the Music 'Teachers’ Association on Tuesday last. The function took the form of an afternoon tea, and was held at “Berwyn,” Grey street, the home of Air and Aim G. Smith. Air J. Vita, president of the association, with a few well-chosen words, introduced the guest of honor. Briglitly-colore 1 spring flowers lent an artistic effect to the reception room when afternoon tea was served. Air Bryan gave some interesting sidelights on examinations, teaching in general, and the preparation of pupils for examinations. Among these present were Airs P. Leslie, Misses C. Adair, N. An engagement is announced between Edward William, eldest son of Mrs. Armstrong and tho late Mr. V. E. Armstrong, of Gisborne, and Eve, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs F. E. Gaddum, of Waingake. Far more fantastic substitutes than artificial jewels have* been devised by some of the “smart” women who have been visiting Deauville. By day, one particularly lovely Spanish woman wears necklaces, bracelets, and even earrings made of gailyeoiored rubber flowers. In the evening she appears in the Casino wearing a necklace of china plates! This looks lass odd than it sounds; the “plates” are only as large as shillings, and are exquisite antique miniatures famous Sevres and Limoges designs. It is when this woman goes bathing, however, that she excels herself; for then she puts on, appropriately enough; a necklace made of fishbones.

( Ormond Women's Institute i The monthly meeting of the Ormond ! Women’s Institute was held last Tues day in the Ormond flail. There were 41 present, including two • new members, Alesdames S. I’ardoe and S. Grayson, and eight visitors. The proceedings opened * with the institute soug. The roll call was sewing hints, was well responded to.- Perhaps the best answer was, “A stitch in time saves nine.” Airs. Twaddle gave it demonstration on how to make paper owls to hold peanuts for Christinas trees. The competition was for the prettiest coat-hanger, the winner being Aliss Johnson, with Mrs. J. R. Jones ! second. The amusement, .motor cars, was won by Aliss Grey. The hostesses were Alesdames Newman, Mullen, McMillan, McKinnon, and Winning, and Miss Porter. Pre-Nuptial Party

Allen gave a most enjoyable farewell party at their home ‘‘Linton,” in honor of AHss Hazel West, whose marriage to Air Frank AleCullough took place on Thursday. Burke entertained some friends at a very enjoyable bridge party on Wednesday evening; Shades of gold were used for ' the decoration of the draw’ing-room, car? ried out in tastefully arranged Iceland poppies and beautiful marigolds, and the dining-rponi was gay with sweet peas and'petunias. A charming black lace fl'pek was worn by the hostess. A dainty supper was served during the evening, when play ceased for a short interval. Among those present were Dr. and Airs D. L. On Thursday afternoon a very charming bridge party was given by Mrs W. Hobson at her home at Ormond. The guests included a number of ladies from Gisborne, and some from neighboring districts, who enjoyed a verypleasant afternoon .at the country home. Mrs Robson received, her guests in a smart suit of blue.jersey tweed. The drawing-room was fragrant with lilac, which was artistically arranged with Iceland poppies, making effective decorations. The tea t&ble held a bowl of bright Iceland poppies surrounded by many plates of dainty eatables for the refreshment of the guests. Among the guests were Mesdames R. J. Reynolds, Stevens, J. A very happy time was spent by the guests on Wednesday afternoon at a bridge party given by Mrs R. M. Gunn at her residence in Wamui road. An effective bowl of Argentine pea adorned the large cool verandah, where one table was arranged; the other two tables were in the drawing-room, which was most attractive with its artistically arranged mixed spring flowers in bowls and vases placed about the room. Mrs 'Gunn wore a very becoming model frock of floral crepo-de-chine, designed in a large bright rose pattern on a black ground, with a simply-cut corsage and frilled skirt. • A dainty tea was served in the diningroom where the table held a large bowl’ of mauve and yellow Spanish irises of exceptional beauty.
