UNUSUAL END TO MATCH
SPECTATORS RUSH FIELD BALL NOT “DEAD” AT BELL An exciting and very unusual ending to the Rugby League match between Eastern Suburbs and' Devonport-Marist combined teams was witnessed at Carlay Park, Auckland, last Saturday. The visitors were one point behind the home .terim, and there was great excitement right on time when Pope and Pearce made a splendid effort to win the game. Tlie hell sounded for time and thousands of spectators jumped the fences amt rushed the ground. -Several players of each team had lfeft the playing area, and the situation becariie tense when Mr. P. Rogers, tlie referee, ordered tlie game to edritinud. 1 The ball was not “dead” accordingto tlie rules. Play was held up while officials vainly tried to clear the ground. Some minutes later, from the serum, the ball was sent to Campbell, tho combined’ team’s full-back, who kicked 1 ! out of bounds on tlie full. This necessitated another scrum. Tlie visitors’ brilliant’ centre, D. Jirown. made a great effort to score, but j.us,t failed to hold Normari’s pass. The ball then became “dead,” ahd the whistle sounded for t-iine live-minutes' after the bell had' rungi, The referee's' 'nilihgs w'ere in order.
