PROGRAMME OF THE HOUSE
CURTAILMENT LIKELY MEASURES REVIEWED (Parliamentary Keporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A considerable curtailment of the Government’s legislative programme will be involved in the decision to go :o the country, and the more important measures will be concentrated upon at the expense of less urgent proposals. The Customs Bills will be passed, and in view of the demands of members, the Broadcasting Bill will be submitted, doubtless in its present form, and an attempt made to translate its provisions to the Statute Book. To ensure the passage of the Transport Licensing Bill, the Government may agree upon modifications to meet the wishes of members, and the same apply with regard to the Building Construction Bill, which is on the verge of the committee stage. There is unlikely to be any opposition to the disposal of the Hawke’s Bay Relief Funds Bill. The House will be asked to consider an amendment to the Unemployment Act, which is expected to propose an increase of 2d iu the £ in tho wages tax to provide the £500,000 additional revenue necessary for the development of Mr. Coates’ ’ unemployment relief schemes. An amendment to the Mortgagors Act will be presented, and an endeavor made to havo it approved this session. The main and supplementary estimates, and tho public works estimates will have to be passed, and the Finance Act containing statutory borrowing authority and other proposals will require attention. Other legislation giving effect to the economy proposals of tho supplementary budget will have to be deferred until after the result ol the elections is known. It is now practically certain that the conteifiplated amendment to tho Arbitration Act will either be jettisoned r.t submitted tc thi House in a distinctly modified form.
