(Herald Correspondent.) Farmers and horticulturists who expected that Tuesday’s thunderstorm would bring with it a good downfall of rain were doomed to disappointment. Scarcely any rain worth speaking about followed. On Wednesday afternoon a number of tlie lady frierids of Airs. H. E. Stanton, who is leaving for the Bay of Islands next month, met at tho residence of Mrs" F. Badley, North Clyde. An enjoyable afternoon was spent with competitions and music, the. winners being Mesdumes Sutcliffe and Hislop, whilst songs were given by Mesdames Stanton, Sutcliffe, and Campbell. Fruit salad and tea were served, and the guest was handed a small parting gift, for which she made a suitable response. The death occurred at the Wairoa Hospital of Mr. Alex. McCorkindale, second son of Mr. and Airs. A. McGorldndale, of Waiatai, after an illness lasting several months. The deceased, a very popular young man, was formerly in the employ of Mr. AV. Coker/North Clyde. He went to Australia three or four years ago and became i'll there. After his return he entered the Wairoa Hospital for treatment, and though all that was possible was done for him lie gradually became .worse and passed ft way, to the great grief of his parents and numerous friends. The funeral took place on Wednesday, a large ifumber of mourners being present. The Rev. T. A Speer, minister of St. Andrew’s, conducted a short service at the clmrch and at the graveside. ■ v . Monday being Labor Day*, outdoor sports will be in full swing. The chief attraction will be the opening fours of tlie 1931-32 rowing season, for which a number of crews have entered. Tennis, bowls, and croquet also will claim their devotees. The monthly meeting of • the Kotenaaori_ Women’s Institute -was held in the Y.AI.C.A. Hall, there being a good attendance of members. A competition, the best home-made shopping bag, was won by Airs, do Malmanche, and Aliss Baliburton. Airs 1 . Spencer, the institute organiser, gave an interesting exhibition of wool-weaving and homemade toys. A play-reading given by Airs. AVav was rmuch appreciated. A dainty afternoon tea was served, the committee acting as hostesses. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very enioyable afternoon. Atr. and Airs. A. ,T. Alacpherson and child left for Dannevirke on Friday.— Archdeacon Butterfield, vicar of ft. Paul’s, AYairoa, with Air. G. C. Fletcher, is attending the Anglican Bynod in Napier. So far the fruit prospects for the Wairoa district are decidedly good. Plums and peaches are “setting” well and as yet there is no sign o'f the “bladder plinn,” a disease that troubled growers last year. Apples and pears are also looking well, but a good deal of aphis disease is imported, necessitating constant watching and a libShil use of the nicotine spray. There was a fair attendance of members at tlie annual meeting of the Afarumaru Tennis Club. The balance-sheet was adopted and, tho nieethnr decided to open tho season on Labor Day, with a tennis tournament. . Tho election of officers resulted :—President, Airs. Freliner ; treasurer, Air. F. S. -Shaw, both re-elected; secretary, Mr, N. E. Frehner; tournament committee, Miss B. M. Gallagher, and Air.’ E. Powell. A good season is anticipated. A special request social held in connection with St. Peter’s Catholic Church was well attended., Ale,sdames J. Buchanan and J. Renonf were the hostesses, and acquitted themselves well in all tlie arrangements. Mr. Bright’s orchestra provided the music. In the euchre tournament the prizes w»re won ns fol-lows-—Ladies: Mrs.'F.
