Ilis Honor John Ranken Reed, C.8.E., has been appointed president of the New Zealand Prisons' Board. Mr. James Drummond celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday at Braeburn, Nelson, this week, lie was born at Aouchtertyre, Perthshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1855 in the ship Sir Alien M‘Nnb. Among many events of the past Mr. Drummond remembers seeing Queen Victoria in Scotland in 1842. Eight children, 27 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren were present at the party. Dr. J. W. Mcllrnith, senior inspector of the Wellington education district, is laing transferred as from the beginning of next year to the position pi senior inspector of the Auckland education district. Mr. W. J. Boden is to act as senior inspector till ;i successor to Dr. Mcllraith is appointed. Mr. A- N. Burns, of the Wellington inspectorate, is to retire at the end of the year, and will be succeeded by Mr. E. Partridge, Wanganui.
