CRICKET SEASON SENIOR MATCHES AT OVAL Tkcrc was a satisfactory master of cricketers at tho Oval this afternoon for the official opening of the 1931-112 cricket season iii, Gisborne, aiul the indications wore that increased interest tvould be shown in the sport this sumther, all clubs being strong numerically. Although an additional team was available for the Saturday senior competition, the Poverty Bay Cricket Association restricted the competition to six teams to obviate the necessity of a bye for one team each playing day, and the six teams took the field to-daV, the matches played being as folldW:— High School v. Gisborne Club; Old Boys v. Civil Service; and Turanganui v. City. An -interval was declared at 3.30 p.m. t when the customary ceremony of declaring the season open was perf formed by the president of the association, Mr. V. C. R. Mitford, after the players and visitors were served with afternoon tea. T. H. Bovvley, Sussex, professional cricketer, formerly coach to the Auckland Cricket Association for three seasons, received £ISOO from his recent benefit match when his county played Middlesex at Brighton.
