Coleman, performed the ceremony, and the Mayoress was The first official visitor to step across the threshold of the kiosk, where at the conclusion of tho ceremony the official party were the guests of the beach society at afternoon tea. The gathering was presided over by Mr. A. J. Nicol, president of the Wai kanae Beach Improvement Society, wiio in handing to His Worship a silver key wherewith to open the main doors of tlio kiosk, mentioned that lie did so with a feeling of pride that the building was opened free of debt'. The society litul not been under the necessity of making any public appeal for the purposes of building the new kiosk, whicJi had been financed out of tho carefully conserved revenue from the improvements previously installed. Tiie Mayor commented that it gave him much pleasure to feel that the building was not subject to a load of debt. The large crowd which ho felt sure would have been present on a more congenial day would have appreciated greatly this evidence of what the Society had been able to do for the public of Gisborne, it was finite an achievement to construct a building of the kind out of revenue, and the society was to be warmly commended, lie felt, on tho sue cess with which it was catering for the needs of the public, lie felt that he could truthfully sav that no society of the kind was doing better work than the Waikauae Bench Improvement Society. He remembered when ,a few years ago the idea of improving the beach had been taken up by a former resident of Gisborne, a Mr. Cameron, whose experience in other parts liad shown him what could he done with such a foreshore, and who had infused enthusiasm and energy into the activities of the society. His successors had earned on worthily the work so started, the Mayor continued, and he felt that if Mr. Cameron were to return to Gisborne now, lie would feel that the efforts he had made had not been wasted. The men and women who were following up the work formerly done by Mr. Cameron and his colleagues of earlier years, added Mr. Coleman, were doing well by the future of the town and especially by. that of the young folk.. He personally thanked them for their sus tamed enthusiasm and intelligent recognition of the needs of the people, and expressed the hope that ' the society would have another successful'-season, with tho provision of the new kiosk fully justified by the degree of patronage advanced. , . His Worship then turned the key in tiie lock of the main doors, and formally declared tho building opened to, the public. Tea was later served to visitors in the cosy interior of the kiosk, which was tastefully decorated, the fittings and design of the new building being much admired.
