18 MILES “PRO” CONTEST

Jn the. road race held yesterday afternoon by the Poverty Bay Professional Athletic, Cycling and Dancing Club, there was a field of 17 cyclists, including one recruit from the ranks ol the amateur riders in Die person of 1). Milder. The event was well contested, and over the 18-mile course, the backmarkers’ moved up steadily, coming into close touch with the long-handicap men near the finish. The first home was F. Wells, whose handicap was 9min. 30sec., the other places being filled by riders on substantial handicaps,'but the scratch men were close up. The results were as under:—

F. Wells (9rnin. SOsec.) 1 Herb. Davis (llniiii.) 2 M, Davis (6min. 30sec.) 3 Fastest time was registered by S. West, who rode his first race from the scratch mark. Ho was given good pacing by his companion back-.niarker. Harry Davis, who in the last race made fastest time and made up a lot of ground on West. The ex-amateur, D. Millier, rode a good race, arid though he suffered from the disadvantage of being on his own practically throughout the course, was only half a minute outside the time recorded by West, 45min. 6sec.
