THURSDAY CRICKET

COMPETITION CLOSED TROPHY TO DEFENCE CASH STORES NARROWLY BEATEN The Defence cricket team secured a victory by a narrow margin over Cash Stores in the deciding match yesterday in connection with the Thursday cricket competition, which is now closed. Hie scoring was remarkably low, anti the first innings of Hetence, upon which they secured their victory, produced a nteagio 38. ii\ o more runs than tlie total acuieved by Cash Stores. The match was won on tlie first strike, no wickets having been lost in the second innings of Defence, in which there was a marked improvement in the scoring when time was called.

Of the Defence players, who batted first, only two succeeded in compiling double, figures, J. .Scholium making 12, and J. Bussell 13, the highest score amongst the remainder of tlie batsmen being live. Newton and Guthrie shared tho bowling, the former taking four wickets for 28, while the latter finished the innings with the remarkably line average of six wickets for as many runs. Amongst the Cash Stores batsmen there was not one who readied ilouOie figures, and the highest scorer was 11. holdswortli, with nine. The wickets fell cheaply against the bowling of Joe Scholium and Griffiths; Scholium took live tor 22, and Griffiths’ average was only a little lower than Gutlmc's, Grittitlis taking live wickets for seven runs.

J. Scholium and Nicholson were the opening pair for Defence in the escond strike, and it was then that the adores began to improve. Both batsmen hit out freely, and when time was called the former had 24 and the latter 22 to their credit, Scholium having hit one six and two lours, and Nicholson three fours.

i An unusual position arose in cotinec.. turn with tlip conclusion of the competition yesterday, and it is probable that some discussion will bo necessary at tho next meeting of the cricket association. The association previously passed a resolution that the competition should be closed yesterday, and two matches were set down to be played, that of which a description appears above, and another between Nomads and Y.M.C.A. Only one of the Nomads’ players and two of tho Y.M.C.A. side turned up, however, and the match, of course, could not bo played. Prior to yesterday Nomads were the leaders of the competition with 66 points, Cash Stores being next with 63, • and Defence third with 62. Defence, as the result of yesterday's match, tire now on top with 67 points, and Cash Stores and Nomads each have 66 points, | Y.M.C.A. having 33. The failure of tlie second match to eventuate, in view of tlie decision to close the competition yesterday, must, it is fell, give the , trophy to Defence, who made their first appearance in the competition this season.
