A ease of considerable interest' to traders and (be public was heard bv Mr Woodward, S.M.. when 10 charge's .of using 'trading stamps, and one of redeeming trading stamps, was brought against Universal Distributors, Ltd., on a private information laid by the New Zealand Master Grocers' Federation. Counsel for the federation said the company sold its certificates to some retailers in one locality to the exclusion of other retailers. Afraid of losing custom, many retailers purchased coupons at £2 10s per thousand points, for issue to customers. One coupon, which meant one. point, was handed to customers who purchased 2s worth or over, while a five point coupon was handed to customers who paid accounts weekly. Counsel for the defendants admitted the facts, and said Hie scheme was really a system of advertising and helped retailers to obtain cash payments. He alleged the prosecutions had been instigated by retailers discontented because they bad been unable to participate iii the system. He submitted no offence had been committed. Decision was reserved.
