THE AMBASSADORS CAPE END Or SYDNEY NIGHT LIFE SYDNEY, Jan. 14. On Saturday night the Ambassadors will close down for an indefinite period—a reminder of how depression has practically banished the night life of Sydney. Seven years ago the Ambassadors lirst. opened its doors and was immediately hailed as the most lavishly equipped restaurant in the Soul hern Hemisphere. It crystallised an .old dream of Mr David ' Stewart Dawson, whose order was to build practically without regard to Cost. After two years' work, the restaurant was completed—and Hie bill came to £140,000. - Despite the prices charged, which were in advance of previous standards for the city, patronage was heavy for a time, but if was generally known that the enterprise was not securing a profitable return. Right from the start the restaurant was costly to conduct. Interest oh the big investment, rates and taxes, and- wages of,the staff, are said to have exceeded £SOO a week.
