FIGHT FOR LIFE
JOFFRE’S ILLNESS WATCHED AMPUTATION (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Dec. 31, 11 a.m.) PARIS, Doe. 30. It is revealed that Marshal Joffre was given onlv a local anaesthetic and watched the amputation of his leg without showing the slightest emotion. The latest bulletin states that he retains consciousness and has taken a little nourishment. He bore unfatigued the dressing of his wound. M. Brinnd, on leaving the nursing home, said slowly and emotionally: “The marshal has remained, as he always was during the war, admirable in resistance and courage.’’ The doctors express the opinion that Marshal Joffre is making a fight for life rare in medical annals.
