NEW YEAR ATTRACTIONS

MANY SPORTS EVENTS PUBLIC WELL CATERED FOR Most sections of the public of Gisborne and district are well catered for with sports attractions during the New Year holidays. Numerous gatherings arc to ho Held, and the public will have even more events to choose from than during the Christmas holidays. It now requires only fine weather for the new year to open with the true carnival spirit that has marked the opening of past years. However, if the holidays are marred by rain, the disappointment will hoi he general, for the farming community will rejoice if really \yet weather intervenes.

The attractions really commenced today with the cricket match between the Wellington eleven and Poverty Bay at the Oval. The match is to be continued to-morrow and Friday. The visitors were defeated on the Coast by Waiapu, hut they have now had time to settle down after their journey, and a bright performance is expected of them in Gisborne.

The thrills of motor-cycle racing always attract a generous response from the public, and the meeting on the Park racecourse to-morrow should he no exception. The successes of Gisborne riders in Opotiki should be sufficient to stimulate great interest, while in addition some of the Dominion’s best will be participating, including the intrepid Percy Coleman. The small amount of rain that has fallen should assist in solidifying the track for the benefit of the riders, thus adding to the exciting nature of the contests. The annual sports meeting in Te Karaka is certain to attract a good attendance, and the splendid entries received should provide more than usual interest for the spectators. The 34 events have attracted leading talent from all parts of the district, and included in the programme will be amateur and professional athletic and cycling as well as horse events and chopping contests. To Karaka sports ground is one that is speedily improving, and already a fair amount of shelter is provided. Further northward along Hie railway line the Rakauron gathering is scheduled t.o provide sport for a large attendance. The usual attractive sports programme has been arranged, and the efhcient organisation for which the Rakauron sports committee is well known should ensure a good day’s outing. The Nuhaka Show is the maul attraction to the south ol the district, and, as in the case of other years, a laigc attendance should result. Ihe natural grandstand well shaded hv trees provides adequate shelter on a hot summer’s day, and makes the place ail ideal picnic ground. On the Coast, the Waiapu sports in Tikitiki should form the chief attraction, while in AVaipiro Bay a tennis tournament will he held. p or bowltii's, interest will be. ecntvou in the Peace Shield tournament, which will lie competed for in (hpe sections. On Friday, the last of the holidays, the Ormond sports will claim the main attention from the general public. The usual attractive programme has been arranged. On the same day sports will he held in Tolaga Bay, and a visit is to he paid by the Defence Rifle Club' to Nbbaka.
