BURGLARS FOILED
SHOPKEEPER INTERVENES DARING ATTEMPT A daring attempt fo enter the grocery shop of Mr. N. Howie, Massey road, Mitngere, was mlido iit about 3.30 a.m. bn Monday reports an Auckland correspondent. ’ i’iie intruders, who _ gained entrance to the building by forcing l lie wooden ffoht door with a crowbar, wero disturbed at their work, and left without taking anything. '■ Hearing a. noise of splintering wood, Mr. Howie, wlio resides in the house hdjoiniiigl the shop, made investigations, find found intruders ransacking the shire. They immediately ran into the rdatl, where they hoarded two waiting hiotor cars, one of Which was driven in the direction of Onehungii and the other toward Otahuhu. Mr. Howie followed the men, a fid when lie .realised that lie could not overtake them lie threw a garden, fork through the glass windsci'Ce'n of the nearest car in an effort to prevent it being driven away. Although broken glass was scattered in fill directions, the occupants of the car did not appear to be injured. Giving to darkness, i\lr. Howie was tillable to ascertain how many men bi’dke Into Ids premises, but he is of the bpiflibh that the attempted burglary was the work of a “gang,” and that at least two men entered the shop. He was also unable to distinguish the number plates oft/tTie vehicles. About £5 Worth of tobacco, which had been collected and made into a package by the intruders, was found behind the counter.
