WAIAPU WINS WELL

W. OATES STOPS A ROT WELLINGTON COLTS DEFEATED (Special to the Herald.) WAIPTRO. BAY, this day. Though the Wellington colts led by Air. A. Doneghue were beaten in the match with the Waiapu Cricket Association's representatives, concluded yesterday, there was a time during the second innings of the homo team that held the elements of disaster. The Wellington aggregate left the home side only 97 runs to got in their second strike and in view of What Waiapu had done to the Wellington bowling in the first innings it looked a good tiling for tho homesters. Perhaps they took their task a little lightly, but whatever the cause, the Waiapu men were in serious trouble before their innings was well under way. The destructive factor was McAllen, who in the first Waiapu innings had taken three wickets for 38 runs, and who produced better form in the second. Bennett and G. Mill opened for Waiapu, and their partnership, which in the first innings had been a most profitable one, lasted only a few minutes, McAllen getting both dismissed in turn, and also bowling Spence, who succeeded Bennett at the crease. Doneghue also bowled well, and got the wickets of 8. Afill and Gilmore, one batsman being stumped and the other caught with Ins leg in front. With less than 30 on the board, Waiapu thus bad lost five of their best batsmen, but the coming of W. Oates changed the complexion of tho innings, and he played solidly until tho required, number of runs liad been secured, scoring 36 unfinished. Aloody helped tilings along with a scoro of 12 that, in tho circumstances, was really valuable, and extras helped also, tho' total of these being 19. The borne side won with four wickets in hand, after an exciting strike. Scores: — WELLINGTON First innings 198 ♦Second Innings Romberg, c Bennett, b Gilmore ... 11 Fortune, o Ilati, l> W.
