DISTRICT TOURNAMENT

FOUR DECISIONS REACHED MEN’S DOUBLES DENOUEMENT Four sections of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament were brought to finality by last evening, and it was intended that Hie balance of the matches in all other sections of the tournament should he disposed of to-day. Many of the players here are expected to fake part in tlie annual Wuipiro Bay tournament which starts on Thursday, and there will he little enough time for the finalists in the later classes at the district fixture to reach the Coast centre.

The main interest in yesterday’s games centred on the final match in the men’s champion doubles, in which Bull and Chrisp met Watson and Alitehell. As stated in yesterday’s is&ue, the first set went to Bull and Chrisp, 6—4, but tbe second brought out much better combination between Watson and his partner, and they took the first, three games in succession, then lost, two, and ran out the winners of the set 6—2. Opening the third set. both pairs played determinedly and with more steadiness, and some delightful rallies were seen. Bull excelling in passing shots down the lines. The games went with the service, but at 5-ali, Bull dropped his service, and Watson, after being within a point of doing the same, recovered and look the game and set, 7—5. Watson and Mitchell were now in the lead, and though their form in the fourth set was not as blight as in the third, they nevertheless succeeded in bringing the match to a conclusion, when at 5—3, they captured Bull’s service The set score was 4 —6, 6 —-2. 7—5, 6—3. The ladies’ singles championship was won by Aliss P. Hopkinson, who. as stated yesterday, defeated Miss AI. Bull in a hard game that went to B—6 in the first set, and 6—3 in_ tho second. with a number of deuces in several of the games. In a match such as this the strength qj a player is severely tested, and Aliss Hopkinson retained a punishing pace throughout. The ladies’ handicap singles was also brought to the decisive stage, when Aliss E. Denton heat Aliss Regally, after conceding her four points in 40. the final score being 40—33 in favor of Aliss Denton. Tbe ladies’ handicap doubles also went through to finality. Mrs. Woodrow and Aliss E. Maxwell accounting for Misses Alillar and Oman, from whom they received a concession of eight points on the handicaps, by 40—28.
