Complaining to his wife that his week’s wages of ,32s were too small, Ernest Gehrmann put on his best clothes, returned to the steel works at Cologne where he was employed, lighted a cigar, and stood near a .mixing crucible full of molten metal. As the' cover of the crucible lifted, 'Gehrmann, still smoking, suddenly mounted the staging and jumped into the glowing mass and was immediately iirein’erateu.
