NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS THRILLING ENTERTAINMENT The public of Gisborne should be treated to plenty of thrills at the Gisborne Sports Motor-Cycle Club’s sports at the Bark racecourse on New Year’s Day. Grass track motor-cycle racing is acknowledged to be one of the most spectacular and thrilling sports, and New Zealand is fortunate in having the fastest grass track riders in the world. Thirty-six entries have been received for the races, and practically every district in the North Island will be represented. Some of the visiting riders are very favorably impressed with the local track and are of the opinion that the long “straights” will be conducive to very fast performances. Foremost among the visiting riders are the following: Percy Coleman, acknowledged to be without equal as a grass track rider and holder of the world’s record and also the New Zealand heavyweight championship; Tui Morgan, New Zealand lightweight champion, an artist at cornering and a rider with a great record of performances; O. Lundius, a dashing heavy weight ■ rider; R. S. Penniall, the Stratford Streak; A. L. Running, winner of the North Island lightweight championship; P. Fletcher, ilie dirt track rider from Auckland, whose spectacular cornering is always popular. A gratifying feature of the racing is the performances of the local riders at Opotiki. I). K. Collisnn, K. Graham and S. D. McLeod at the Boxing Day meeting there took four firsts, four seconds and two thirds and also will he on hand here on Thursday to resist the attacks of the outside, riders. Other' local riders who will compete are 0. Greaves, 11. Stevenson, .1 Clayton, and K. Dunlop. A first-class programme will be given, and all results will he announced through loud speakers. A miniature golf course also will he available so that this popular game mav he played between events.
