PICTURES FOR AUCKLAND PURCHASER RETURNS =. * Officially, the deepest secrecy stirrounds the large purchase ofpicturesthat has just been made in Europe for the Mackelvie collection in the Auckland Art. Gallery... Air. E. W. Payton, former-, ly director of the Elam School of Art, who was sent on a special mission to Europe to purchase pictures on behail of the Mackelvie trustees, and who te turned to Auckland by the Rangitane last, week, declined to make any statement regarding the number or nature ol the works, or the sum spent upon them, ‘i have nothing at all to say. It is entirely a matter for the trustees,” wdS his reply to an inquiry. “The chairman, Sir Alfred Bankhart, and Mr. Q, H. Wilson, a trustee, are still in Eng,' land, and until Sir Alfred returns, about the end of the year, nothing about the pictures will be disclosed. When Si| Alfred arrives they will be hung, ana a special exhibition will be arranged.” Asked if he tcould give any informal tion as to the number of pictures thai had been bought, Mr. Payton repeated that he had nothing to say." He declined either to affirm or deny a report that he had obtained approximately 150 pictures at a total cost of £6ooo*.
